Mike Rose on the Meaning of Intelligence

I heard Mike Rose for the first time on a Speaking of Faith podcast just the other day.  I was very moved by what Mike Rose had to say about learning, schools, values and social class.

More on Mike Rose (from his blog) “If I had to sum up the philosophical thread that runs through my work, it would be this: A deep belief in the ability of the common person, a commitment to educational, occupational, and cultural opportunity to develop that ability, and an affirmation of public institutions and the public sphere as vehicles for nurturing and expressing that ability.”

I’ve just added his most recent book, Why School? to my list… “I ask how to educate a vast population, what to teach and how, who will do it, what the work will mean. We still ask these questions because we haven’t satisfactorily answered them. And the way we answer them says a lot about who we are—and what we want to become.” —FROM WHY SCHOOL?
